Kiln Controller

When I decided to build my own electric kiln for firing ceramics, I thought it would be a great excuse to also build the associated control circuitry.

I wanted a flexible platform on which I could experiment with custom control schemes, additional sensors and wireless connectivity.

The result is an Arduino shield with thermocouple circuitry, a large display, navigation buttons and individual control of up to three logic level relays.

Specifications

  • Compatible with Arduino R4 (and older)
  • Supports thermocouples of type K, J, N, R, S, T, E & B (IC: MAX31856)
  • Individual control of up to three relays
  • Large and bright display

The PCB consists of two layers, where all components are placed on the top side for ease of manufacturing. Most components are surface mount, except for the header pins, screw terminals and the display.
